5. Change your environment

Our personal happiness has a lot to do with where we spend most of our time.

At home:

  • Watch less TV (hiding your TV behind a cupboard will help discourage use)
  • Reduce noise inside your home by setting aside quiet times when vacuum cleaners, washing machines, stereos and TVs are off. Curtains can help to block out some outdoor noise
  • Establish a room for reading, playing an instrument, practising a hobby, or playing board games
  • Optimise your bedroom for sleep: remove TVs, computers and brightly glowing clocks. Minimise use of your alarm clock where possible and allow yourself to wake up naturally.

At work:

  • Travel on different routes to work to see new surroundings
  • Enjoy the commute by listening to music or audiobooks, or travelling with a friend
  • Find ways to make your job more interesting and challenging by talking to your manager
  • Organise regular, informal morning teas with your colleagues to foster good working relationships and boost morale
  • Explore local parks, city centres, markets, restaurants, public gardens, beaches or museums in your lunch breaks or free time.
