Sausage roll mix, where are you?

I'm really sad that i can no longer find the sanitarium sausage roll mix anywhere. It was my favourite of all the products. Not only did it make excellent tasting healthy sausage rolls but it was an excellent addition to any meal calling for a mince substitute. The new bolognaise mince doesn't compare to the sausage roll mix. Bring it back!

Re: Sausage roll mix, where are you?

I have noticed the disappearance of most of my favourites too! The sausage roll mix, which was great for sausage rolls (had a party once and the meat eaters didn't even notice the difference!) and they were great for meat-balls too. Also recently these products have vanished: Chicken Nuggets (great for casseroles, pasta, by themself), stir-fry strips (had my non-vegetarian boyfriend happily eating these now is back to meat!), the chicken and ham style deli slices, and actually I can't even find TVP anymore. I contacted sanitarium about the nuggets and deli slices and got a reply saying they were deleted from the range. I am getting increasingly frustrated that everytime I find an meat alternative I like they are taken off the shelf. I do like the new mince etc but I wish they should bring back the old favourites!!!

Re: Sausage roll mix, where are you?

I agree, it was such a great product. I'd also make rissoles with it by adding some extra TVP. If anyone knows how to make a similar mixture that would be great.. Please Sanitarium bring it back or advise us of a similar product. Thanks

Re: Sausage roll mix, where are you?

    I miss it too!

It was a standard item in my pantry, ready to whip up a batch of sausage rolls or to add to something else.

Such a shame when our favourites disappear!

Re: Sausage roll mix, where are you?

I was just sniffing around the sanitarium website in an attempt at tracking down my beloved sausage roll mix, and came across this forum... I'm saddened to hear that the sausage roll mix has been deleted!

You see, my boyfriend and I have had the habit of checking every single supermarket that we walk by..... including those that we visited while on a recent trip around NZ! We miss making mock-sausage rolls the EASY way!

I do however have a great recipe for mock-sausage roll mix.. I'll dig it out and post it here in case anyone is interested! Big Smile

Re: Sausage roll mix, where are you?

I once emailed Sanitarium about how much I missed the sausage roll mix and what a good product it was, but I never got a reply Sad

Lately I've found that if you buy the veggie sausages of another brand (that tend to be softer) and put them in pastry they work well. You can squish them a bit to make it more authentic Wink

Another good product they don't do anymore is the "chicken nugget" mix.... I notice they still do the TVP. Does anyone buy that!

Re: Sausage roll mix, where are you?

Hi Megan yes please do post your recipe, we really miss the sausage roll mix, and also Rediburger which we loved so much we would even eat it straight out of the can. It's so disappointing to lose products that a) we adore b) make our lives as vegetarians or vegans so much easier and c) we can use to start winning over meat eaters who say "I'd love to try to be a vegetarian/I hate being cruel to animals but it's too hard". It's weird this is a Sanitarium forum but they don't seem to post replies? I hope they read them and maybe reconsider cancelling those products. Thanks you guys for posting alternative ideas and eg the crueltyfreeshop links, I've just signed up to their newsletter and will try their sausage roll mixes :)

Re: Sausage roll mix, where are you?

Okay.. here is the vege sausage roll mix. I haven't made these in a LONG time, but I do remember that they were really good!!

    You will need:

    Puff pastry

    275g breadcrumbs

225g mature cheddar cheese -- grated

    1 large onion -- grated

    3 tbs thick double cream

1 tbs fresh chopped herbs (eg chives, parsley, thyme, etc)

    1 1/2 tsp mustard powder

    pinch of cayenne pepper

    salt and pepper

    ____________

    Preheat oven to 220 degrees.

To make the filling, place all ingredients into mixing bowl & season well. Mix thoroughly.

Lay pastry sheets out on the bench , cut into strips and then divide the filling amongst the strips of pastry. Arrange the filling along the entire length of the pastry.

Get a bit of soy milk (or beaten egg if you're that way inclined), and put a little bit along one edge of the pastry. Seal the pastry over the filling, to for the sausage roll shape. Re-arrange the roll gently so that the sealed edge is underneath.

Cut the rolls into the lengths that you want for your sausage rolls. Arrange them on lightly greased baking trays, and then *** the tops gently several times with a fork.

Bake on the top shelf of the oven for 20 to 25 mins - until they are golden.

Allow them to cool a little bit on a wire rack.... then EAT

If anyone makes them, let me know how you go!! Smile

Re: Sausage roll mix, where are you?

It seems to me that this is a case of yet another corporation giant that does not listen to it's customers. I have asked them several times to bring this product back but they just don't listen. The vege delights range is slowly dissappearing from Coles in Box Hill. Safeway is a dead loss and carries virtually none of the range at all. It's so hard to be a vegetarian in a country dominated by carnivores. Are you listening Sanitarium? I'll say it again, and I'm not the only one asking: BRING BACK THE SAUSAGE ROLL MIX!!!

Re: Sausage roll mix, where are you?

Howdy folksOnce more a really good vegetarian product off the market.  For years I have preached the Vegan/Veggie Ethic (have been into Animal Rights issue for over 27 years now) and have slowly converted some of my family and friends to a veggie lifestyle.  At parties, the Sausage Roll Mix has proved a tremendous success - folk saying that they preferred this over meat sausage rolls.Come on Sanitarium, have a heart for the animals and bring back the Mix so that we who a vegan/veggie can convert folks, not just be talking about the issues of eating animals and factory farming, but likewise via the taste buds.So heartening to link up with like-minded folks.
