Sanitarium has contacted representatives of the Australian vegan community to understand the important values that make a product suitable for Vegans. Because our products are made on machinery that also handles lacto-ovo ingredients (milk, egg etc) we are legally obliged to communicate on our packs that trace amounts of these ingredients may be present.
We assure you that none of these ingredients are included in the recipes for our products that use the Vegan Friendly logo. In fact, these trace amounts of lacto-ovo ingredients are often undetectable even by sensitive instruments.
In the vegan community, it is generally acceptable for vegan products to be manufactured using the same machinery that is used to manufacture non-vegan products as long as the machinery is thoroughly cleaned in the process. Sanitarium produces its Vegan Friendly products in accordance with these standards.
The Vegan Society of NSW main objective is to promote the vegan lifestyle it recommends Australian businesses should follow the guidelines established by the UK based Vegan Society, which along with the American based Vegan Action society, shares the same views as this policy regarding the use of shared machinery to manufacture Vegan products.
